This 3-day course is a prime theoretical/hands-on training event on microextraction methods. Take the opportunity to learn from the experts and see that microextraction is more than just a few “simple” procedures. Understand the theoretical principles behind each technique, and learn how these principles can help you produce better results in your laboratory. The course will cover all aspects of microextraction procedures, with a special focus on solid- and liquid-phase (micro)extraction. Course lectures will be followed by hands-on experiments covering solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and several modes of liquid-phase microextraction (LPME). A complete method development strategy will be illustrated by real-life examples and coupling to gas chromatography (GC) and liquid chromatography (LC) will be introduced in detail. At every stage, the sample type and characteristics will be taken into consideration next to the green and cost-related aspects of sample preparation methods. Advanced experiments can also be arranged for more experienced users.

Why do you need to attend this course?

Sample preparation is the most critical and error prone part of an analytical method and any errors made cannot be corrected by using even the most advanced analytical instrumentation systems. During this course, top academic experts will give you a sound understanding of a comprehensive set of microextraction methods and teach you how to face challenges and avoid pitfalls when developing and applying microextraction methods in your laboratory. This course will show you how to choose the “right” and “green” methodology as well as reduce laboratory costs and waste. You will have valuable opportunities to gain new skills and knowledge, improve existing ones as well as stay ahead of the competition. If you have reasonable gas and liquid chromatography experience, but want further hands-on training in microextraction and keep up-to-date with the latest developments in the area, then this course is for you.

Who should attend?

The course is intended for both new and advanced industrial and testing lab analysts, PhD and MSc students, post-docs, lab managers and supervisors, academic based lab technicians and R&D staff working in environmental, food/beverage, flavor/fragrance, bioanalytical, cosmetics, pharmaceutical or other analytical fields.

Aims

The aims of this course are:

-To build upon and extend the theoretical and experimental concepts on sample preparation and microextraction in particular

-To develop the competence and confidence of participants in microextraction methods

-To highlight modern advances in sample preparation/microextraction within analytical chemistry

-To identify appropriate microextraction technique for particular applications

Learning outcomes

After completing this seminar participants should be able to:

-Discuss and review in a comprehensive and critical way the methods available for converting liquid, solid and gaseous sample into a form suitable for the measurement step

-Identify the most suitable microextraction method based on the type and characteristics of the sample

-Discuss the theoretical principles governing sample preparation/microextraction

-Plan method development and interpret the effect of experimental parameters

-Identify the most suitable instrumentation to be used after microextraction

-Identify measurement errors during the sample preparation analytical step

-Validate analytical methods and apply them to the analysis of real samples

-Interpret data and present the conclusions drawn in written and oral form

-Explain to non-specialists how microextraction can be expected to increase productivity and sensitivity, reduce laboratory costs and provide valuable information in different areas of chemistry and related disciplines.

-Identify green sample preparation methods
